When I do work I love … I sometimes feel guilty. Do you ever feel that? It is like you are just playing. Around 2010 my friend Dr. Joe Jones pointed me toward a quote from Dr. Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
Following this course might be inconvenient or uncomfortable. You might have to change careers, change cities, change friends. You might have to grieve — yes, grieve! — what you are giving up to follow what you know that you must do, in order to pursue the victory. Will you do it? Here are two suggestions for getting started:
1. Run a 1% experiment. A year has 8760 hours, and 1% is about 88 hours. What experiment can you run in 88 hours? Attend a conference? Plan an event? Meditate? Plan-go-do. You can continue your “day job”, while you run this experiment.
2. 4×6 cards. Around your home, start placing 4×6 cards with inspirational quotes, verses, songs, mission pieces, or drawings. Put the cards in places where you will see them: On your doors, on your bathroom mirrors, on your car steering wheel. Why the cards? Because once you start to unleash the power of YOU, the voices will start to come: “You are not smart enough.” “You don’t have enough money.” “You’ll lose everything.” And you need those cards to reject those voices, and replace them with the One Voice.
