Q: What steps do I need to take to graduate?- Declare your “intent to graduate” on e-Lion in the first week of the semester in which you intend to graduate. - Check your degree audit. Q: Can I use the Engr 295/395/495 co-op credits?A: You may use these courses together for a 3-credit Engineering Elective. You may also use the credits for a Professional Elective. They cannot be used for a ChE tech elective. You must petition these courses to count as an Engineering or Professional Elective. Q: Are any Chemical Engineering courses offered over the summer?A: Two courses are offered as of now: 1) CH E 320 Phase & Chemical Equilibria, 2) CH E 350 Process Heat Transfer. Students usually register in February or March. More information can be found at http://www.engr.psu.edu/cde/distance/distance.html. |
Q: How do I find out more about International Education or Study Abroad?A: Time spent with global education will likely change your life! Not only will the time benefit you professionally, showing your ability to dig in and adapt, but you’re going to love it! To get an idea of what is involved with global education / study abroad / international education, browse http://www.engr.psu.edu/Global/ and http://www.engr.psu.edu/global/Students/SemStudyAbroad.htm. Many ChE students go to the University of Melbourne (Australia) or Leeds (England), as well as many other locations. Check the timing of the academic year, since oftentimes international schools have a different academic calendar than we do at Penn State. A more complete list of available destinations is given at Engr 301 is a 1-credit orientation to Global Engineering Education, which is also helpful. There is also a certificate that is offered (http://www.engr.psu.edu/Global/Students/IntlEngrCertificate.htm). If you need more information about Global Education, email international@engr.psu.edu,. Q: When is Career Fair?A: These usually occur in September and February. Watch for the announcements. |
Q: Personally some major events happened last semester, and I want to withdraw from the semester, or retro-actively withdrawal. What should I do?A: There is information on the web for withdrawal at http://www.psu.edu/dus/handbook/withdraw.html. The withdrawal form is at http://www.registrar.psu.edu/student_forms/withdrawal.pdf. If you are retro-actively withdrawing, you’ll need to write a petition (http://www.psu.edu/dus/handbook/petition.html) to the Faculty Senate. There is also a sample letter for retroactive withdrawal at http://www.psu.edu/dus/handbook/sampleletters.html. For some circumstances, there is additional information at http://www.psu.edu/dus/handbook/trauma.html. Please don’t hesitate to see an advisor if you need further help. Q: What are some of the minors that ChE students take?A: Common minors include the following: Engineering minors: http://www.engr.psu.edu/Departments/minors.aspx Environmental Engineering minor: http://www.engr.psu.edu/CE/env_minor.html Chemistry Minor: http://www.altoona.psu.edu/chemistry/Chemistry_Minor.htm Math: http://www.math.psu.edu/ug/minor Engineering Leadership Development: http://www.eldm.psu.edu/leadership/index.html Engineering Entreprenurship: http://www.e-ship.psu.edu/about.html Pre-med (“sort of” a minor, with info from BioE): http://www.bioe.psu.edu/students/HealthProfessionsPrepforBIOE.pdf
You’ll need to fill out an “entrance to minor form”: http://www.registrar.psu.edu/student%5Fforms/entrancetominor.pdf. Q: Are any scholarships available for ChE students? |
Q: Where do I find forms such as those for an “entrance to minor form” or a “change of major form” or a “withdrawal form”?A: See http://www.registrar.psu.edu/student_forms/. Q: How do I declare an option in Chemical Engineering?A: Option Selection Forms are located on the counter in 158 Fenske. ChE 210 must be completed with a “C” or better before you can be accepted into an option. No option form is required for the General Option. Q: What is a 3-6-9 petition?A: A 3-6-9 petition is for the GH-GS-GA general education courses. Penn State requires 6 credit hours in each category, but if you have 9 credits in one of them, you can petition to alter the 6-6-6 balance to 3-6-9. You cannot use two languages as general credits. This petition is almost always approved, and fairly standard. Q: I am an upper level class-person, and I do not have a first year seminar What should I do?A: You may take a FYS, or you may petition any other 1-hour credit for the FYS. |
Q: How do I start undergrad research?A: Look on the websites of the faculty in the ChE Department. Identify a few research topics that interest you, perhaps your top 2 or 3. Email those faculty to request a short 10 minute meeting to discuss possibilities, showing a keen interest in the project. Often when faculty have openings for undergrad research, they will encourage you to sign up for ChE 494 (undergrad research). Some faculty require 6 credits of ChE 494 in their lab, although only 3 will count toward your ChE technical electives. Q: What is the Integrated Undergraduate/Graduate (IUG) option?A: The IUG enables you to earn both your BS and MS degrees in 5 years. More information is found at the website, http://www.che.psu.edu/Ugrad/Honors/IUG-cheguide.htm. |
